6th Grade Research & Debate
Should violent games be banned? Should cell phones be allowed in schools? And are sports worth the risk? These complex and provocative issues affecting our society were explored, researched, and debated by sixth graders in Ms. Alloway and Ms. Forero’s Language Arts classes.
These formal debates were the culmination of an IB MYP unit of study on Research and Argument Writing, and were moderated by guest teachers, supervisors, and SOMS administrators. Over the course of the unit, students worked in teams to research their assigned issue, find evidence to support their claim on the issue, and prepare to rebut the claims of their opponents.
The debates took place on Feb. 4 – 6. For each debate, two teams competed against each other where they presented their well-researched arguments before guest judges, including Mr. Uglialoro, SOMS Principal; Mr. Schmidt, Supervisor of Special Services, 6-12; Mr. Cicenia, 7th Grade Science Teacher; Ms. Cahill, Physical Ed/Health Teacher; Ms. Kingsbury, IB Coordinator & Model UN Teacher; Mrs. Janine Gregory, K-6 ELA Supervisor; Christine Jansen, SOMS Media Specialist; and Mr. James Jennings and Ms. Cathy McDonough, SOMS Assistant Principals.
