Hour of Code Initiative Comes to SOMS
SOMS students participated in the Hour of Code (http://csedweek.org
) initiative during science class during the week of December 9th -13th. The goal of this global initiative is to provide all students with one hour of basic computer coding and to raise awareness of the need for computer science courses in schools. On Tuesday, December 10th, students were treated to a unique experience in which they got to work with volunteers from Microsoft’s New York office. As stated in Principal U’s weekly email, “At SOMS, our students will be completing one of the tutorials/modules created by www.code.org
during one of their science classes. The module features video tutorials on basic coding by accomplished computer programmers (and celebrities), and then provides engaging activities that challenge students to apply the skills. You can view the many free tutorials that have been created for the Hour of Code
at their website: http://csedweek.org/learn
.” Talk to your child about his/her experience or better yet, check out one of the modules with them.
