Mr. Ezzo’s Drum Circle
Mr. Ezzo’s drum circle, Vitamin D (the D stands for drum), specializes in West African/Brazilian music utilizing a system of music education from Brazil known as O Passo (the step). O Passo is based on the natural gait all of us use – walking. It mimics a conducting pattern, and the participants embody the rhythm through walking. It approaches music literacy by starting in a place where all students can achieve. The use of numbers and the letters A, E, and O represent every possible subdivision. Then, they gradually work their way to the traditional notation. Vitamin D embodies the 4 pillars of O Passo – Body (as an autonomous means for music making), Representation (using oral, aural, and graphic notation), Self (realizing ones role both as an individual and a group), and culture (exploring authentic experiences that redefine what we perceive as culture).
Although Vitamin D is a 6 week club, Mr. Ezzo is hoping to renew each cycle to keep it going. Vitamin D was a group Mr. Ezzo originally started in college at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. One of his hopes is to get the two groups playing together at some point. Until then, our children get to experience this fantastic group during performances at SOMS.
